HOW TO PLAY

A cartoon color game with an actual cast

01

Study the toon

An original illustrated character appears in full color for a few seconds. Focus on the named target part.

02

Recolor from memory

The target region resets to gray. Tune hue, saturation, and lightness while the character updates live.

03

Compare the characters

See the reference and your version side by side, earn up to 100 points, then share the five-round result.

Meet Toon Shade

Toon Shade is a free browser-based cartoon color guessing game. Instead of relying on franchise artwork or emoji clues, it uses an original modular SVG cast across four worlds: Critters, Heroes, Magic, and Space.

The daily challenge gives everyone the same five characters. Practice mode lets you replay individual worlds. No account or download is required.

Cartoon color game FAQ

What is Toon Shade?

It is a five-round visual memory game. You briefly study an illustrated character and then recreate one hidden color with HSL sliders.

Is the artwork original?

Yes. The characters are rendered locally from original SVG shapes made for this project. No third-party character images or remote assets are loaded.

How is the score calculated?

The reference and guessed colors are converted to the Lab color space and compared using Delta E 76. A smaller perceptual difference earns a higher score.

Does the daily challenge change?

Yes. A date-based seed selects the same five-character set for everyone each UTC day.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface, artwork, sliders, and result cards are responsive for phones, tablets, and desktops.
